- Whisk the flour, baking powder, baking soda, garlic powder, and salt in a large bowl.
- Cut in the shortening with a pastry cutter or your fingertips until the pieces are about pea-size.
- Fold in the cheddar.
- Stir in the buttermilk just until no dry flour remains.
- Drop 8 portions of dough, about 1/4 cup each, onto the baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
Bake the biscuits
- Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, until the tops are golden brown and the biscuits are cooked through.
Make the garlic butter
- Melt the butter in a small saucepan over low heat.
- Add the garlic and cook for 30 to 60 seconds, until fragrant.
- Remove from the heat and stir in the parsley.
Finish the biscuits
- Brush the hot biscuits with the garlic butter.
- Let them rest for 5 minutes before serving.
Notes
For tender biscuits, mix the buttermilk in just until no dry flour remains. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; freezer-friendly. For a gluten-free variation, use a cup-for-cup gluten-free flour blend.
