Ingredients

chicken breasts
  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts about 6 oz each
seasonings
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 0.25 tsp black pepper
  • 0.5 tsp garlic powder
  • 0.25 tsp onion powder
cheese
  • 6 Swiss cheese slices
creamy sauce
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed cream of chicken soup
  • 0.5 cup sour cream
  • 0.33 cup whole milk
stuffing topping
  • 2 cup herb-seasoned stuffing mix
  • 5 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley

Equipment

  • 1 sheet pan

Method

Prep and layer
  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. This helps prevent sticking and starts the oven at the right temperature.
  2. Season the chicken breasts evenly with salt and black pepper. Ensure the seasoning is distributed across the full surface area.
  3. Arrange the chicken in a single layer in the prepared baking dish. Keep the pieces spaced so they bake evenly.
  4. Layer the Swiss cheese over the chicken, slightly overlapping the slices when necessary. Cover the chicken so the cheese melts into the top layer.
Make the creamy sauce
  1. Whisk the cream of chicken soup, sour cream, whole milk, garlic powder, and onion powder until smooth. Mix until no streaks remain for a uniform sauce.
  2. Spread the creamy mixture evenly over the Swiss cheese and chicken. Cover all exposed areas so the casserole bakes creamy throughout.
Add topping and bake
  1. Combine the herb-seasoned stuffing mix with melted butter, then toss until the crumbs are evenly coated. Make sure every crumb looks lightly buttered.
  2. Scatter the buttery stuffing mixture evenly across the casserole. Create an even layer for a golden, crisp top.
  3. Bake uncovered for 35–45 minutes at 375°F until the topping is golden and the chicken reaches 165°F in the thickest portion. Look for a deep golden crust and verify doneness with the internal temperature.
Finish
  1. Rest the casserole for 5 minutes before serving. This lets the sauce thicken slightly so each scoop holds together.
  2. Finish with chopped parsley. Sprinkle just before serving for a fresh green contrast.

Notes

For best results, confirm the chicken hits 165°F in the thickest part, not just near the edge. Store covered in the refrigerator up to 3 days; reheat individual portions in the microwave until hot. Freezing is not recommended because the creamy sauce can separate when thawed. For a lighter swap, use reduced-fat Swiss cheese and low-fat sour cream while keeping the bake time the same.
